The Italian Paintings
In 2015 and 2018, I was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome.
I fell in love with Italy and in particular Roman and Etruscan wall paintings. Their imagery feels ancient and at the same time contemporary. To stand in front of a wall mural that has been buried under ground for centuries makes me feel ephemeral and small. I took their presense back to my studio in Michigan, to try to feel and paint their wonder and beauty.
